Josh Solomon | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Newark police on Saturday released video of a random attack committed against a 72-year-old man Friday afternoon in the city’s Ironbound neighborhood.
Video shows the man walking along the sidewalk at about 10 a.m. on Ferry Street, near Merchant Street, when the skateboard-riding assailant in a red hoodie sweatshirt approaches him from behind. The rider dismounts the board, takes two jogging steps to catch up, winds up and hits the man along the side of his head from behind.
The man was knocked unconscious and was treated at University Hospital, where he was in stable condition, police said. No arrests had been made as of midday Saturday. Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara asked for the public’s help to find the attacker and released photos of a suspect in the assault.
The perpetrator was described as wearing a black jacket, red hooded sweater, and beige pants with red sneakers, authorities said. O’Hara urged anyone with information to call Newark’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-695-8477 or
