Jasim Dillard-White, of Newark, states in court papers police officers were negligent when they chased a vehicle at high speeds on Sept. 8, 2023, and collided with the Lyft as it traveled north on Elizabeth Avenue.
An Essex County man has filed a lawsuit against the Newark Police Department and Lyft Inc., alleging he was injured when a patrol car involved in a high-speed chase crashed into his ride-share vehicle.
Two Newark police officers were chasing another vehicle at high-speed pursuit, also northbound on Elizabeth Avenue, when they made a sudden lane change and crashed into Dillard-White’s Lyft, states the suit, filed Monday in Superior Court of Essex County. The suit alleges the city and its police department knew or should have known that the officer driving the patrol car “would be likely to operate a motor vehicle in a negligent manner,” but the complaint does not state why.
