A man accused of fatally shooting a nine-year-old boy in Newark, New Jersey, pleaded not guilty to charges, including murder. The incident, which also injured another man, shocked the community and prompted a swift response from law enforcement.
A man accused of fatally shooting a 9-year-old boy and wounding another man in Newark entered a plea of not guilty on Thursday. The suspect, identified as Dunbar II, faces charges of murder just six days after allegedly shooting at an unidentified individual, tragically striking Yasin Morrison outside his grandparents' home. 'When the victim is an innocent, 9-year-old, beautiful child, that sends a shockwave throughout the entire community,' stated Essex County Prosecutor Ted Stevens.
'And that demands we give our absolute best bringing that perpetrator to justice, which we believe we have done.' Authorities believe Dunbar was pursuing a 36-year-old man walking on Osborne Terrace, intending to shoot him. The intended target sustained injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. 'People have asked us what's the motive?' added Essex County Chief of Detectives Mitchell McGuire. 'I can tell you there is no motive that justifies what happened.' Morrison's family expressed relief that Dunbar II was apprehended and highlighted the overwhelming support they've received from the community. 'As a resident and a father I'm deeply hurt,' said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. 'I was at the hospital that evening. The family, it was troubling, traumatizing watching them in their grief.' Alongside the first-degree murder charge, Dunbar faces counts of first-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault
