Connor Gaskill admitted to causing the 2022 crash that killed Rashid Conteh. He faces up to four years in prison for the charges.
A Pendleton man, Connor Gaskill, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to four charges stemming from a 2022 drunk driving crash that tragically killed Rashid Conteh. Gaskill's charges include Causing Death When Operating While Intoxicated and three counts of Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 24th at 1 p.m.
Gaskill faces a potential sentence of up to four years in prison, home detention, or work release, along with a probation period of up to two years. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop other charges against Gaskill, including Reckless Homicide. The victim's family released a statement expressing their profound grief and emphasizing that the harm inflicted by Gaskill's actions cannot be quantified by any sentence. While acknowledging that the plea agreement falls short of fully addressing their loss, they expressed support for the prosecutor's decision and commended their dedication to the case. They urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence permissible under the plea agreement. According to a court document, Gaskill was driving at a high speed of 55 mph in a 30 mph zone and ran a stop sign, failing to apply his brakes before colliding with a Lyft vehicle in which Rashid Conteh and two other passengers were traveling. A probable cause affidavit details that Gaskill ran the stop sign at the intersection of East 24th and North Delaware streets, crashing into the Lyft carrying Rashid Conteh, his brother, and another individual. The affidavit notes that signs near the stop signs in that area indicate that cross traffic does not stop.Rashid Conteh sustained critical injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital, where he sadly passed away. An autopsy concluded that his cause of death was 'multiple blunt force injuries resulting from an accident.' Rashid Conteh's brother, the other passenger, and the Lyft driver were also injured in the crash. The affidavit states that Gaskill initially told an officer he 'did not remember how the accident happened' and claimed the Lyft had turned in front of him on East 24th Street. However, upon further questioning, he admitted he 'couldn't give an honest answer about how the crash occurred.' Gaskill was observed by officers to have glassy eyes, suggesting intoxication. Prior to the crash, Gaskill had been drinking with his girlfriend and a friend in downtown Indianapolis but left without them as they refused to ride with him due to his level of intoxication
