Residents of Newark are demanding answers from village officials after personal items were removed from gravestones at the Newark Cemetery , leaving many families outraged and saddened. A group of passionate and distraught community members filled the village board meeting Tuesday night, seeking explanations for why sentimental items left on loved ones' graves were discarded.
Mabel Murray, who left a frog on her mother's grave as a family joke because her mother feared frogs, expressed her dismay when it disappeared in November after four decades.Families noted that while the cemetery typically undergoes seasonal cleaning, this time, it was different. Crucifixes, crosses, statues of the Virgin Mary, wind chimes, flags and photos were all tossed aside. 'Their stuff was just wiped off graves like it was nothing. Like it meant nothing,' Murray said. 'And it meant something to somebody.' Newark Village Mayor Jonathan Taylor stated he could not comment on the ongoing investigation, but acknowledged the impact on the community. 'We certainly understand where they're coming from,' Taylor said. 'All of us on the board have family and friends in the cemetery, so we all can relate to what they're speaking to.' Linda Brunner, whose son is buried in the cemetery, also reported that personal items were removed from his grave. She is seeking an apology from the mayor. 'There was no understanding,' said Brunner. 'He was just stoic about our concerns. Show some emotion, say we're sorry.' In November, Taylor told 13WHAM that the village was reviewing cemetery policy and how to better handle personal items. Former Newark Mayor Peter Blandino questioned the village's actions, stating that such an incident had never occurred befor
