Some of the lowest paid workers at the region's three metro area airports will get raises under a new policy approved by the Port Authority board.
Wages for some of the lowest-paid airport employees, who work for contractors, could be going up starting in January, with the raises to be funded by allowing concessions to charge higher prices.
“Paying a livable minimum wage contributes to having a stable base of workers at the airports,” said Rick Cotton, Port Authority executive director. The proposed Port Authority policy change covers thousands of airport workers at Newark, JFK and LaGuardia and provides annual wage increases beyond The new proposal provides for three upfront increases of 75 cents an hour in January 2025, July 2025 and January 2026. Starting on Jan. 1, 2027, annual increases would be tied to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’, a three-year moving average for the Northeast region, which is consistent with minimum wage policies in the two states, officials said.
