New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a Monday press conference that 671 deaths were reported on Easter Sunday—taking the state’s death toll over 10,000 since the coronavirus outbreak began there—but added that the spread of the virus has been controlled, and that “the worst is over.”
Cuomo called the 10,056 deaths “terrible news, as terrible as it gets,” and that the 671 deaths on Easter were “especially tragic.” Cuomo said that New York’s curve continues to flatten, with the total number of hospitalizations plateauing, while the net change in intensive care admissions and intubations continues to go down.f we turn that valve too fast you’ll see the numbers jump up.” We are starting on the way back to normalcy.”
Cuomo laid out milestones that New York will have to meet in order for everyday life to resume, in which people can go back to work and children can return to school, and emphasized it will be regionally coordinated with businesses, education and transportation. Over the next 12 to 18 months, Cuomo projected that while businesses slowly reopen, a medical treatment to help coronavirus symptoms subside will be announced before a proven vaccine becomes available.“There is going to be no epiphany, no morning where the headline says ‘Hallelujah, It’s Over.’ What will happen is that there will be points of resolution over time,” Cuomo said in reference to restarting normal life.
