Any hope that New York City’s 1.1 million public-school students would be able to return to their physical classrooms this school year is now officially dead. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Saturday that the city’s public-school buildings would not reopen again during this school year on account of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The school year isn’t finished, of course, as the city continues to pursue remote learning — but that effort has not been successful in engaging students from low-income households across the city, particularly because many of those kids have not had access to the necessary internet-enabled devices.
