Additionally, the team was designating catcher Omar Narváez for assignment.
This would be by far the worst season of his nine-year career, and the Mets are electing to go in a different direction for their backup catcher spot.Instead, the team acquired Torrens from the Yankees for $100,000. The 28-year-old played in 18 games with the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners in 2023, slashing .250/.300/.357. He signed with the Yankees in January and has only been in Triple-A, hitting .279 with five home runs, 19 RBIs, and an OPS of .807.
