The New York Jets announced their decision to move forward without Aaron Rodgers for the upcoming season. While Rodgers' future playing career remains uncertain, the Jets have officially ended their partnership with the veteran quarterback.
The New York Jets announced Thursday they informed quarterback Aaron Rodgers that they are moving on without him next season. While Rodgers hasn't declared whether he intends to continue playing for a 21st NFL season, the Jets, in a move that signals a new direction for the franchise, have officially severed ties with the veteran quarterback.
In a joint statement released by the team, CEO Christopher Johnson and team chairman Joel Glazer stated that they met with the 41-year-old quarterback last week and conveyed their decision. 'It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures,' the statement read. 'We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.' Rodgers has one year of non-guaranteed money remaining on his contract with the Jets. New York would incur a hefty $49 million dead money charge next season if they don't designate Rodgers a post-June 1 cut, which would allow them to spread that charge over two years. Rodgers' journey with the Jets began in April 2023 after an illustrious 18-season tenure with the Green Bay Packers. The team acquired him with the hope of ending their Super Bowl drought, which dates back to the legendary Joe Namath and the 1968 season. However, Rodgers' first season in New York was cut tragically short after just four snaps into his debut due to a torn left Achilles tendon. This devastating injury extinguished the Jets' Super Bowl aspirations that had been ignited by Rodgers' arrival. Despite this setback, Rodgers diligently worked his way back onto the field and started every game this past season. However, both he and the offense struggled with consistency and results, culminating in a disappointing 5-12 record. 'I personally want to thank Aaron for his time at the New York Jets,' owner Woody Johnson stated in a separate message. 'His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career. From Day 1, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here.' Rodgers' 28 touchdown passes and 3,897 yards passing in his single season with the Jets both rank third for a single season in franchise history. Unfortunately, he faced mobility issues early in his return and later encountered additional leg injuries, including a significant hamstring ailment. The Jets' offense with Rodgers at the helm faltered, the defense, once a formidable force, was a pale shadow of its former self, leading to the dismissal of both general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh midway through the season. In what turned out to be his final appearance with New York, Rodgers threw a season-high four touchdown passes in a win over Miami on January 5th. It was a glimpse of the brilliance he possessed and a bittersweet reminder of what could have been for Rodgers and the Jets
