A new wildfire erupted Wednesday night near Runyon Canyon in the Hollywood Hills, prompting evacuations and raising concerns due to strong winds and the densely populated area.

Los Angeles firefighters were battling a new blaze Wednesday night in the Hollywood Hills. The fire is near Runyon Canyon , said Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley. 'I don't have much information,' Crowley said at a news conference Wednesday that had been called to give updates on several other fires burning in the area. 'I can tell you that we are deploying all available resources at this time,' the chief said before excusing herself.

The 10-acre fire appeared to be burning south toward Hollywood Boulevard at 6:30 pm. Traffic was heavy as people tried to flee the area. The fire is burning near a densely populated area of apartments, condominiums and homes at the base of the Hollywood Hills. Retired Los Angeles County Fire Captain Bob Goodman told KTLA News that the burning embers of the fire posed a serious danger to nearby structures. 'Down slope spot fires that could occur in a very densely populated area is a great concern,' he said. 'There's a lot of ornamental vegetation, palm trees, all that will burn easily.' Goodman urged all residents near the fire to evacuate immediately, warning that strong winds could cause the fire to spread rapidly. 'Just one small ember falling several blocks downwind in very populated areas could start a conflagration that could cause fatalities because people waited too long to get out of those neighborhoods,' he said. An evacuation zone was established for the fire from Sunset between the 101 freeway and Laurel Canyon and between Mulholland Drive and Hollywood Boulevard.
