A wildfire fueled by extreme winds scorched a hillside in Los Angeles, prompting evacuations for tens of thousands of residents. Roads became gridlocked as people fled their homes, with some abandoning their vehicles and running on foot.

A wildfire fueled by extreme winds ripped through a hillside in Los Angeles dotted with celebrity residences on Tuesday, torching homes in Pacific Palisades and prompting evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people. In the frantic rush to safety, roads became gridlocked and many abandoned their vehicles to flee on foot, some carrying suitcases.

The traffic jam on Palisades Drive was blocking emergency vehicles, and an excavator had to be brought in to push the abandoned cars aside and clear a path, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was in Southern California to attend the dedication of a national monument by President Joe Biden, made a detour to the canyon to see “first-hand the impact of these swirling winds and embers,” and said he found “not a few, many structures already destroyed.” Authorities did not give an exact number of structures damaged or destroyed in the Pacific Palisades fire, but said about 30,000 residents were under evacuation orders and more than 13,000 structures were at risk. And the worst could be yet to come. The fire started around 10:30 a.m., shortly after the start of a Santa Ana wind storm that the National Weather Service warned could be “potentially deadly” and the strongest to hit Southern California in over a decade. The exact cause of the fire was unknown and no injuries had been reported, officials said. Just about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast, in Altadena, another fire had reached about 162 hectares (about 400 acres) by Tuesday night, prompting evacuations, according to the Angeles National Forest on the social media platform
