Monday, March 30, 2026 12:38AMSFMTA just released a new map - showing the streets with the most collisions involving drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Christine Ericksen just had a close call with a driver in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco.
"I was crossing the street from Gus's, a car pulled out in front of me making a left hand turn going down 4th Street," said Christine Erikson. "He could have hit me if I was just a couple of feet further." This comes about 4 weeks after a 2-year-old girl was killed and her mother seriously hurt while they were crossing the street at fourth and channel."The neighborhood is still grieving. It affected all of us," said Ericksen. A new "high injury" traffic report just released by SFMTA points out some of the biggest injury hot spots in the city of San Francisco.Nancy Botkin is a pedestrian advocate. "It's really great that we are doing that and identifying them. It's going to be very powerful tool," said Nancy Botkin. The report indicates some locations have improved. In SOMA, on Townsend between 3rd and 8th Streets, the number of collisions are down because of a number of changes made including a separated bike way and pedestrian pathway."I'm grateful for seeing some things going in the right direction," said Supervisor Matt Dorsey.The report only includes data thru 2024. Supervisor Matt Dorsey says the report does not reflect the implementation of two important street safety changes---the use of speed enforcement cameras and "daylighting." "Daylighting at intersections-- which is basically removing parking spaces so there is better visibility," said Supervisor Dorsey.How much revenue was made after 16K citations in 1 month since installation of SF speed cameras"We are seeing an uptick in traffic crashes," said Dorsey. "I want to see more police enforcement. I want to see more traffic cameras. I'd like to see more red-light cameras and more use of technology to keep our streets safe." For now, many say this new "high injury traffic report" is a critical step to addressing the dangers on our streets.Related Topics
