) - A new nonprofit is working to bring businesses back to downtown Citronelle’s historic district, starting with a Christian t-shirt shop that opens Saturday. New signs now mark old, empty buildings in downtown Citronelle.
The Downtown Citronelle Revitalization Corporation just formed with the goal of bringing new shops to the historic business district. Darius Parker, a business owner and board member of the corporation, said he wants to restore the area’s former vitality. “I speak to a lot of the original residents, and they speak of how big the street used to be. For a lot of people, they have a lot of childhood memories, as far as all the businesses that were offered on this trip until 45 so I’ve always just had that passion to bring it back,” Parker said.Parker and his wife Chavell have opened ‘Migh Tee Design’, a t-shirt shop with its grand opening set for Saturday at 2 p.m. in downtown Citronelle. Chavell Parker, co-owner of the shop, grew up on the street and remembers when it was full of stores. “I was a little girl walking up and down this strip. It used to be full of stores, so I want to have that for my children. I cannot wait for what is getting ready to happen on this strip,” she said. The shop sells Christian t-shirts, jewelry and journals. But the Parkers want it to be more than a store. They want it to be a place where people can come to relax. “We want to offer a place where people can just come in and sit in the presence of God and pause for a second throughout the day, where they don’t have to get up and run to do the next thing,” Chavell Parker said. The Parkers hope their store will inspire others to open businesses on the strip. The revitalization corporation is clearing out old buildings and building a fence behind the buildings to keep people and animals out. The group also has other ideas in the works, including a mini park plaza for families and a salt dome oven pizza restaurant looking to come to the strip, Darius Parker said.NEW INFORMATION: Former Mayor Sandy Stimpson nominated by Mayor Cheriogotis for new appointmentJury finds defendants in Mobile’s backpack drug trial guilty on all but one count
