It would be hard to say who was happier to finally open the only pool on campus in the Sweetwater Union High School District, the players or Coach Kavanagh

Three days after Christmas, Mariners coach Chad Kavanagh gathered his team and after setting up, everyone jumped into a sparkling new 25-yard by 60-meter pool that, counting down time for COVID-19, was more than three years in the making.

But Quinones, who started the week tied as the team’s point leader, made sure she was one of the first to get in the water on Dec. 28. “Once the school shut down for COVID, we never got back in the old pool,” said Kavanagh. “When we were allowed to come back is when they started breaking down the old pool.”

Boys water polo, a fall sport, never had the opportunity to take advantage of the new pool and will have to wait until September to play a match. Both Kavanagh and Quinones said the biggest challenge of not having their own pool was having to go to facilities like Coronado, National City and some of the Chula Vista city pools for practice and games. Being last on the priority list, they would find themselves practicing from 7:30 to 9:30 in the evening once they got in the pool.

“For three years I’ve carried all of the water polo equipment in my truck. It was nice to have a place to store it.”
