What's coming to Prime Video?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Amazon's streaming service Prime Video is known for its robust catalog, and there are plenty of new movies & TV shows on Prime Video in September 2023.
First launched in 2006, Prime Video quickly proved itself to be so much more than a repository of content, and it even began producing its own shows and movies as well. Backed up by thousands of on-demand movies and series from every era, Prime Video is one of the largest streaming services available. Despite its already massive collection of content to stream, Prime Video continues to grow each month as new shows and movies are added almost daily. With backing from a massive entity like Amazon, Prime Video has almost unlimited resources at its disposal when it comes to producing original content. Some of the best Prime Video original films are on the level with theatrical Hollywood productions, and big-name directors like Spike Lee and Jim Jarmusch have worked with the studio. Emmy Award-winning shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have also proven Prime Video's success in the realm of original content, and new Prime-exclusive shows and movies drop on the platform all the time. All that and more is on Prime Video already, but what is arriving in September? For more on the movies and TV shows coming to other streaming platforms, check out what's new on Disney+ and new on Apple TV+.September 1 The first of the month is always when the majority of the monthly additions appear on Prime Video. September 1 is a particularly loaded start with over 300 titles arriving on that day alone. Likely the most anticipated new arrival is the second season of The Wheel of Time, the television adaptation of the beloved fantasy book series by Robert Jordan. The show is an epic journey within a world where magic exists but is only controlled by some. While the first season wasn't the massive crossover hit Prime Video was looking for, The Wheel of Time season 2's exciting book elements may help it find new fans and stand out. Horror fans will also have a lot of great options on Prime Video starting on September 1 with some classic scares as well as some more recent genre hits. The first entry into the horror anthology movie series V/H/S will be available as well as the acclaimed American remake of The Ring, starring Naomi Watts, and Sam Raimi's wonderfully twisted and criminally underrated Drag Me to Hell. Perhaps even more interesting is the addition of a number of movies from the Universal Monster horror movie collection, including The Wolf Man, Dracula, and The Mummy. There are also some undeniable cinema classics arriving on Prime Video at the beginning of the month, including one of the most influential and ground-breaking movies of all time. 2001: A Space Odyssey is Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece exploring humanity's first contact with a higher lifeform. 2001's practical sci-fi effects make it a timeless entry into the genre as well as one of the most engrossing movies ever made. Other classics arriving include the political thriller The Manchurian Candidate, the sports comedy The Bad News Bears, and the spy classic To Catch a Thief. September 5 The sports documentary series One Shot: Overtime Elite arrives on Prime Video on September 5. The docuseries takes a look at the struggle, sacrifice and hard work of seven aspiring basketball players hoping to make it in professional sports. The show promises to be an insightful and inspiring look at the underdogs looking to prove themselves to the world. September 7 September 7 sees a new Tyler Perry movie outside the Madea universe arriving on Prime Video. The movie stars the likes of Nia Long and Amy Smart in the story of a group of single mothers struggling with the many responsibilities of their daily lives who create a support group to be there for each other. Perry's dramas continue to have great appeal to audiences with the honest and relatable stories they tell. With a fun ensemble, Single Moms Club could be yet another hit for the prolific filmmaker. September 8 Sitting in Bars with Cake is a new emotional drama coming to Prime Video on September 8. The movie is based on the experiences of writer Audrey Shulman. It stars Yara Shahidi as Jane, a shy baker who is encouraged by her outgoing friend Corrine to use her baking skills to meet people. But when Corrine gets a serious medical diagnosis, their friendship is taken to another level. The story of friendships that can endure any problems are always a compelling drama story and the movie looks to balance its light-heartedness and heartbreaking well. September 12 A new thriller and a sports documentary arrive on Prime Video on September 12. Willem Dafoe's iconic roles show how well he can fit into any ensemble but it is always fun to see him headline a project, like Inside. Dafoe plays a master thief who attempts to rob a valuable painting from a high-tech penthouse only to find himself locked inside and desperate to find a way out. Also arriving is the sports documentary Kelce which deals with the incredible 2022-23 season of football star Jason Kelce which included facing his own brother in the Super Bowl and questions about his possible retirement. September 14 Sports fans on Prime Video will be thrilled to see the return of football to the streaming service. Thursday Night Football begins on September 14 with the biggest face-offs and nail-biting matches to come for the entire season. September 15 An intriguing new series arrives on Prime Video on September 15. Wilderness stars Jenna Coleman as a young married woman devastated by the recent revelation that her husband had an affair. When he proposes a trip to help them reconnect and start fresh, she sees it as a perfect opportunity for revenge. The mix of relationship drama and thriller makes for an intriguing combination that could result in an exciting new bingeable series. Also arriving is the sci-fi drama A Million Miles Away which stars Michael Peña as a migrant farm worker pursuing his lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut. Pena is an incredibly talented actor and it will be fun to see him headlining this underdog story. September 19 An intense and harrowing drama is coming to Prime Video on September 19. A Thousand and One is the story of a determined ex-convict who takes her son from foster care to raise him herself. As she begins her journey to prove herself as the mother he needs, her actions have lasting consequences in the future. The movie looks like a compelling and emotional experience that could become a surprise hit from Prime Video. September 22 September 22 has two notable movies arriving on Prime Video. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is the first war movie from the filmmaker and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a US soldier in Afghanistan who is rescued from certain death by his local translator . When he finds out the translator and his family are still in Afghanistan and wanted by the Taliban, he goes on a one-man mission to get them out. Unfortunately, The Covenant was one of two box office bombs for Guy Ritchie in 2023. However, it also marks perhaps his best movie as a director. It is a gripping thriller that avoids cliches of similar stories while featuring great performances from Gyllenhaal and Salim. Cassandro is another movie coming to Prime Video on September 22, telling an unusual and inspiring true story. Gael García Bernal stars as Saúl Armendáriz, an inspiring Luchador struggling to get noticed until he decides to push against expectations and creates a flamboyant and exotic new wrestling persona. September 26 A wild new documentary lands on Prime Video on September 26. The Fake Sheikh explores the stunning career of British tabloid journalist Mazher Mahmood, who carried out countless investigations and sting operations, often posing as a sheikh to trick his targets. Mahmood's work has been applauded and criticized over the years which will make for a fascinating examination of his unusual tactics, his wild results, and his impact on the world of journalism. September 29 The most anticipated arrival on Prime Video for the month comes on September 29. Gen V is The Boys spinoff, continuing to open the outrageous world of superheroes. The new show follows a group of the next generation of supes attending a university where they can hone their skills and prepare themselves to be real crime-fighters someday. However, as is usually the case with supes in this universe, many are also morally corrupted and immature, using their powers to party and destroy. It will be interesting to see how effectively The Boys franchise expands beyond the characters already know and love as well as if this college-set story can match the blood and mayhem of the original.
