New-look Seton Hall wins home opener
Debuting a new roster featuring eight transfers and two freshmen, Seton Hall squeaked out its season-opener against Saint Peter’s, coach Shaheen Holloway’s former team, 57-53, before an announced crowd of 8,072 at Prudential Center. The game featured a whopping 53 fouls and 35 turnovers and slowed to a crawl at times, angering some fans., which reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament three years ago.
Boston College transfer Prince Aligbe had 10 points, including three free throws late to give the Pirates a 54-50 lead. Jenkins added two more foul shots to push it to 56-50. “It saved the game,” Jenkins said of the block. “The guard tried to go downhill, he did a good job blocking it, going straight up in the air.”
Gus Yalden, the former four-star recruit who transferred from Wisconsin and goes by “Gus Bus,” got a big round of applause when he checked in late in the first half. He showed a lot of enthusiasm, chest-bumping his teammates often and also trying to keep Toumi out of further trouble after he and Saint Peter’s forward Stephon Roberts were whistled for a double-technical. Yalden later picked up a technical of his own before going back to the bench. He did grab three rebounds.
