The Freelander brand, a partnership between JLR and Chery, has launched its first model in China. This mid-sized, off-road SUV, built on Chery's T1X architecture, is designed primarily for the Chinese market. It will replace existing Land Rover models at JLR-Chery's Chinese factory. Global sales are possible, although potential competition with JLR's own models remains a consideration.
The new Freelander brand has revealed its debut model in China as a rugged electrified 4x4, created in partnership between JLR and local giant Chery. The first model from the new marque – a sibling to Chery's existing Omoda, Jaecoo, iCar and eponymous Chery brands – is a mid-sized off-road family SUV based on the group's modular T1X architecture - which can accommodate pure-electric and hybridised drivetrains.
Revealed at a dedicated event in Beijing ahead of its public debut at the city's international motor show next week, the Freelander will replace the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque at JLR-Chery's Chinese factory later this year. It has been designed and engineered primarily for the local market, but the company has previously suggested global sales are on the cards. It remains to be seen, though, whether JLR would consider the Freelander too much of a threat to its own model lines – the similarly conceived upcoming Defender Sport, for example – to sell the model outside of China.
