Around 450,000 people living abroad miss out on the State Pension uprating every year.

More than Nearly 171,800 people have signed an online petition calling for an end to the practice of ‘freezing’ the State Pension for nearly half a million Brits who have emigrated to countries that do not have a reciprocal agreement with the UK Government - even though they have paid National Insurance Contributions during their working life.

Retired expats in the European Economic Area will continue to receive annual increases to their State Pensions under the Triple Lock, as will those in a host of other countries including the Philippines and Turkey. “Those in countries with reciprocal agreements are unaffected so if you were a pensioner in the USA you would continue to get an uprating, but if you lived just across the border in Canada you would not.Margaret lives in Australia and receives a weekly State Pension of just £24 each week as it has been frozen for 23 years.

John lives in Canada and receives a weekly State Pension of £80 each week. He said: “It’s already lost a quarter of its value. I thought the Commonwealth had very special ties to the UK, but that is apparently not the case. In fact, if I were only to move about 200 miles further south across the US border, my pension would be fully indexed.”
