New Braunfels Canyon volleyball prepares to make move to Class 6A after winning four-straight district championships in 5A.

NEW BRAUNFELS – New Braunfels Canyon volleyball team’s motto is “Our roots run deep.” The Cougarettes are putting that to the test as they attempt to extend their four-season district winning streak in Class 6A . Canyon returns a solid foundation with nine letterwinners, including five starters, from last year’s squad that went 40-10 overall and 13-1 in district. The Cougarettes ’ 57-3 record in district over the previous four years has resulted in league championships each year.

They also have non-district games against stalwarts Johnson, Reagan, Brandeis, Madison and Antonian. However, the competition from within will determine Canyon’s success. “We’re such a good program because everyone is competitive and when we get in the gym, we get in the gym and we work,” junior outside hitter Marlee Lightsey said. “I think everyone is excited to get to the first game.” There is a notable absence this season with Megan Hawkins, who is now at Louisiana-Lafayette.
