Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner John Hamm proposed the idea of naming the Specialized Men’s Prison Facility in honor of current Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, who “ultimately gave it her blessing,” according to her office.The Specialized Men's Prison Facility, a new Alabama mega prison being built in Elmore County, will be named after Gov. Kay Ivey.
The site of the Gov. Kay Ivey Correctional Complex is 300 acres inside the fence and will include more than 50 buildings when completed. That’s slated to happen in May 2026. When opened, the facility will house more than 4,000 inmates. The cost of the facility has ballooned over the years. It was estimated to have a price tag of $623 million when the contract was signed in 2022.by August of this year with the final price expected to be even higher to account for furnishing the facility.
