The Brooklyn Nets have made a significant trade, sending veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for point guard D'Angelo Russell and three second-round draft picks.
The Nets have traded veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith to the Lakers for draft picks and the return of D'Angelo Russell. Brooklyn sent Finney-Smith and backup guard Shake Milton to Los Angeles for three second-round picks, Maxwell Lewis, and former Net D'Angelo Russell. The Nets will receive the Lakers' second-rounders in 2027, 2030, and 2031. Shake Milton has emerged as a potential point guard solution for the Nets. Russell, averaging 12.4 points and 4.
7 assists, was a key player during general manager Sean Marks' first rebuild in Brooklyn before being traded in a sign-and-trade for Kevin Durant. It remains unclear if he will stay with the team for this second rebuild and if he harbors any resentment from his previous trade. Finney-Smith provided the Nets with toughness on the court and a veteran presence. He was having one of his best seasons, leading the team with a plus-41 rating. Finney-Smith is shooting a career-high 44 percent from 3-point range. However, he had a player option for next year that he was unlikely to exercise, meaning he could have left for nothing in unrestricted free agency. Marks and Nets owner Joe Tsai had an offer of two first-round picks for Finney-Smith as soon as they acquired him from Dallas for Kyrie Irving. However, they were competing at the time and had no interest in a rebuild. Now that they are rebuilding, Russell could once again be part of the process. They acquired the young point guard from the Lakers and developed him into an All-Star. He helped guide them to the 2018-19 playoffs but was traded in the summer of 2019 as part of the deal to bring in Durant.
