A still from Netflix's new mystery series based on the Detective Harry Hole novels.

Fans of long-form genre storytelling have their work cut out this week, with two new shows dropping on Netflix alone. The first is a horror limited series executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers. It's titled Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, and it tells the story of a couple facing unexpected demons in the week leading up to their wedding.

The second show is effectively a reboot, as Netflix has previously done with Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen and the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender. The nine-episode mystery is based on a series of popular thriller novels that was previously adapted into an infamous movie starring Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson. The show promises to be a more faithful adaptation of the source material, much like Prime Video's Reacher series, which followed the two theatrical films starring Tom Cruise. We're talking, of course, about Jø Nesbo's Detective Hole. The show stars Tobias Santelmann in the lead role, alongside Joel Kinnaman. The book series was previously adapted into The Snowman, which was released in the wake of Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo becoming an international literary phenomenon that inspired a trilogy of Swedish movies and an English-language film directed by David Fincher. However, Fincher's film was deemed not successful enough to spawn sequels, and the property was rebooted with a new cast some years later. The reboot film, The Girl in the Spider's Web, received unfavorable reviews and bombed at the box office. But it wasn't nearly as big a disaster as The Snowman, which grossed around $40 million worldwide and is currently sitting at a 7% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Netflix's 'Reacher' Replacement Has a Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Jø Nesbo's Detective Hole, on the other hand, has a perfect 100% score so far on the aggregator website. In her review, Collider's Kelcie Mattson described it as"a roundhouse-kick of a thrill ride" that"delivers virtually everywhere it should." The show will aim to appeal to the audience that has made Prime Video's Reacher and Bosch such massive hits, not to mention the dozens of Nordic-noir series that consistently do well for Netflix. Bosch has run for over a decade at this point, while Reacher is eyeing a further expansion with an upcoming spin-off series.
