The dice have finally rolled in Netflix’s favor. After years of uncertainty, the long-awaited Dungeons & Dragons live-action series has found its new home at the streamer — and it’s coming with a title that means everything to fans: The Forgotten Realms.
Based on the sprawling fantasy world created by Ed Greenwood, the series will be executive produced by Shawn Levy, who’s fresh off producing and directing two episodes on the final season of Stranger Things. But as Levy told Collider’s Steve Weintraub, bringing Dungeons & Dragons to television isn’t just a matter of rolling out another fantasy epic. It’s about building something organic and true to the game’s essence. “D&D is in development at Netflix. That’s true. And I think that the reason it’s taken so long, and the reason why it is a challenging process, is you’re not adapting story IP — you’re adapting a world and a lexicon and a spirit. But story needs to be invented largely from scratch, and it needs to be invented in a way that feels organic to everything that’s great about D&D.” Unlike most adaptations — where filmmakers can rely on pre-existing characters and narrative arcs — Dungeons & Dragons is about limitless possibility, and it’s collaborative storytelling in its purest form. After all, you can't experience D&D by yourself, can you? D&D is not a novel or a franchise that comes with a single storyline. It’s a game of imagination and collaboration, so the world itself has to feel alive and flexible, not locked into one hero’s journey. What Is 'The Forgotten Realms' About? Created by Greenwood in the 1970s and later adopted by Dungeons & Dragons publisher TSR in 1986, the Forgotten Realms is one of fantasy’s most beloved and expansive worlds. It’s home to legendary characters like Drizzt Do’Urden, Elminster, and Wulfgar, and serves as the backdrop for countless novels, games, and campaigns — including the Baldur’s Gate video game series and last year’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. But while Honor Among Thieves leaned into comedy and adventure, Levy’s take aims to explore what makes the world itself tick. The task, he says, is to find that sweet spot between honoring the lore and telling a story that feels fresh. And as for the story? The Forgotten Realms has had quite the journey. The series was originally set up at Paramount+ under Rawson Marshall Thurber before creative shifts and the sale of Hasbro’s eOne studio left the project without a home. Netflix swooped in earlier this year, with Levy now executive producing and Drew Crevello attached as showrunner and writer.
