Pack your backpacks because we are going back to Hillman. Netflix is reviving 'A Different World' with a sequel series, and here's everything we know about it.
Pack your backpacks because class is almost back in session at Hillman, everyone’s favorite fictional HBCU. Netflix is reviving A Different World, the beloved sitcom and spin-off of The Cosby Show, with a new generation and plenty of familiar faces—both in front and behind the cameras.
Following its six-season run from 1987 to 1993, A Different World will soon be back with a new sequel series from showrunner Felicia Pride , who also serves as executive producer and writer. “It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life,” Pride told Tudum. “I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.” The show will also feature Grey’s Anatomy alum Debbie Allen, who served as the original show's primary director from 1989, as director and executive producer. Other EPs also include Reggie and Gine Rock Bythewood, writers for the original show, among others. “There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World. Our show changed lives, tripled the enrollment of historically black colleges, and gave a strong voice and platform for Young Black America,” Allen told Tudum. “The incredible fresh young talent we have discovered, paired with the lovable audience favorite OGs, makes this much-anticipated return a must-see on Netflix.” If you don’t want to miss an update about Netflix’s A Different World sequel series, we have gathered everything we know about the project so far below. Netflix's A Different World sequel is a continuation of the same universe, picking up decades after the first instalment left off with a new generation of Hillman students. The show's official logline, as shared by Netflix, is as follows: “When Deborah, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert's free-spirited, well-intentioned, yet rebellious youngest child, enters her freshman year at Hillman College, she finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape as she sets out to build her own legacy, while having the time of her life, alongside a whole new generation of Hillman's best and brightest.” A handful of actors from the original series will be reprising their roles in the forthcoming sequel. Given the show's premise, you probably already inferred that Kadeem Hardison will return as Dwayne Wayne, as will Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert. Other original stars returning will be Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, Glynn Turman as Col. Bradford Taylor, and Charnele Brown as Dr. Kimberly Reese Boyer. Netflix has also confirmed that Jada Pinkett-Smith will be returning to Hillman to portray Lena James once again. A new generation will be the focus of the sequel series and, as such, plenty of new faces are joining the cast, starting with Maleah Joi Moon as Dwayne and Whitley's youngest child, Deborah. Other members joining the cast include Tichina Arnold as Darlene Duvall, Joshua Suiter as Andre, Raven Goodwin as Dr. Brooklyn Boyer, Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Howard musical theater major Kennedi Reece as Hazel, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Jenifer Lewis as Professor Davenport, Vincent Jamal Hooper as Ellington, Elijah J. Roberts as Jalen, Renee Harrison as Candace, Famecia Ward as Nellie Gaines, and Dasan Frazier as Xavier. See the new cast members in the scroll gallery below: Netflix has confirmed that season one of the sequel will feature 10 episodes. Each episode will have a run time of 30 minutes. Instead of the original's multi-camera format, the sequel will be a single-camera sitcom. At the time of writing, Netflix's A Different World sequel series does not have a tentative release date. However, filming has been underway in Atlanta, Georgia, since February 2026. This post will be updated as news about Netflix's A Different World sequel series breaks.
