Netflix's Terminator Zero was quietly canceled after just one season, swiftly closing the door on one of the few recent successes in the franchise. The animated Terminator Zero is an eight-episode show set in 1997 in Tokyo, where AI developer Malcolm Lee is creating a system to compete with Skynet.
Naturally, the future isn't too happy about that. The series was originally planned to have at least three seasons, but in February 2026, creator Mattson Tomlin confirmed that Netflix had canceled the show. It's not a surprise to those familiar with Netflix's slash-happy production style, but it's a blow to all sci-fi lovers. Terminator Zero Was One Of The Best Sci-Fi Shows Of The Last Ten Years Terminator Zero was quietly one of the best sci-fi TV shows of the last decade. With an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics and audiences alike appreciated the show based on James Cameron's beloved story. The series moves the Terminator franchise to Japan, and tells a bit of a different story than we're used to. The series takes on heady philosophical questions and is not afraid to posit its own theories on the nature of artificial intelligence and humanity, a particularly relevant conversation now in the age of AI. Terminator Zero shows a lot of confidence from the jump, and it's unusual to find a sci-fi series so sure of itself. Add to this well-written story with an intriguing plot, incredible animation, excellent voice-work in both the English and Japanese dubs, and extravagant blood and gore that feels right at home with the tone of the series, Terminator Zero feels like one of the most complete and well-thought-out sci-fi series in recent years. Terminator Zero Understood The Franchise Better Than Other Terminator Sequels After Cameron's Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the franchise starts to falter, and despite a significant number of reboots, sequels, and branching timelines, there are only a handful of moments that capture a piece of what sparked the original two films in the first place. Terminator Zero may be the only post-Terminator 2 production to really understand why people like the universe so much. It wisely avoids bringing in John Connor and Sarah Connor, or worse, the T-800. Terminator Zero isn't concerned with the characters whom we already know far too much about; it cares about the implications of the universe. A key theme of Terminator is an aspect of found family, usually between a robot and a human, and Terminator Zero captures this better than most Terminator productions. Malcolm's disregard of his real family in his attempts to save the future is as compelling as anything involving superpowered robots.
