'It's difficult to believe that anything could be living in that environment,' professor Jay Storz said.
Four miles above sea level. 'Every breath of air contains just over 40% of the oxygen that you'd have at sea level,' Jay Storz said.Atop the Andes Mountains in South America.'The temperature's basically never above freezing. And the wind is relentless,' Storz said.Storz, a Willa Cather professor of biological sciences at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and his research team made a curious discovery — 13 freeze-dried or mummified leaf-eared mice.
Since 2020, Storz has captured several mice living in the Andes. 'At elevations that were, like I said, previously thought to be completely uninhabitable,' Storz said. His team is studying physiological changes the mice may have from their cousins.'How they're able to tolerate the lack of oxygen and in extreme cold,' Storz said. He believes documenting the elevation range limits of different species and plants could be important to monitor the effects of climate change.
