The Texas Education Agency (TEA) received almost 50 applications from potential candidates to serve on a state-appointed board of managers for South San Antonio ISD. The TEA is considering replacing the current school board, a decision expected next month by Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath. The high number of applicants, including past district leaders and current parents, reflects the potential for a significant change in leadership for South San ISD.

While the fate of the South San Antonio Independent School District board has yet to be determined, the Texas Education Agency began looking last month for prospective candidates to replace trustees. The response may have come as a surprise. The TEA said nearly 50 people, including two of the district's past leaders, had applied for the position as of Dec. 12.

A board of managers is a temporary replacement for an elected board of trustees appointed by the commissioner when a school district or charter school fails to meet state standards, including in accreditation criteria, academic performance, financial accountability and governance. South San ISD is no stranger to state intervention.
