Last week the Municipality of Anchorage confirmed there were almost double the amount of homeless people in Anchorage needing shelter than was initially expected, but now the number has grown even larger.
“We have 992 people currently seeking emergency cold weather shelter,” said Alexis Johnson, the Housing and Homeless Coordinator, on Monday.
“Having a roof over our head, it’s a total blessing,” said Danny Williams, who’s living at the Aviator Hotel. With temperatures dropping and there being not enough shelter spaces for those seeking it, officials are rushing to find solutions. Phil Cannon, the president of the Mountain View Community Council, says the notion the city would not be prepared for the amount of people seeking shelter is “a little bit astounding.”
“We were able to just, around a table, in a matter of 15-20 minutes, say, ‘I think I have this many people in my camps,’ ‘I think I have this many people in my camps’ and ... we were able to say we think there’s at least 800 people camping around Anchorage, just in District 1, maybe,” Cannon said.
