ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage School District is putting a focus on attendance, saying students can’t learn if they aren’t in school.show only one school, Ursa Minor Elementary, made the district’s goal of having 90% of its students in school 90% of the time in the month of September. Those same figures show the average percentage of students with 90% attendance was about 72% district-wide.Schools are being celebrated for improving their records.
“Lots of times people think that this day or that day doesn’t matter, it’s just one day in the month, it’s just this or it’s just that,” Marshall said. “What we find in education is that if kids miss 10% of school, their learning actually suffers. If they miss 20% of school, their learning actually almost comes to a stop and sometimes even goes backwards.
“We don’t really differentiate a whole lot between excused and unexcused absences,” he said. “An absence is an absence, if a child is not in school they’re not participating in learning and it has an impact.” Andrew said unlike during COVID, children who are sick with colds and sniffles should usually be attending school.
