NatureScot has expressed its willingness to assist the Scottish Borders Council (SBC) in addressing concerns about herring gull populations in Eyemouth. The conservation body has been working with several local authorities on strategies to manage gull numbers and minimize public health and safety risks.

Conservation body NatureScot has said it is happy to discuss what gull management measures can be taken in the Borders after reports of children being attacked.

Councillor James Anderson said last year that he hoped action could be taken before the end of March to tackle the situation. However, it stressed it needed to balance protecting bird numbers with any public health or safety risks. That led to the NatureScot stressing that licensed control measures could only be used as a "last resort" when there was a risk to public health and safety."We know that gulls can sometimes cause issues in our towns and cities and that recent changes to licensing guidance to help conserve gull populations have caused concern for some people," it said a statement.

It said it had been "working closely" with Inverness, Elgin, Nairn and Aberdeen, providing advice and guidance on their gull management plans.
