Washington avoids sweep
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Carlos Carrasco had not pitched since May 15th because of a neck injury. His return to the mound on Sunday did not go as he would have hoped.
The veteran right-hander was tagged for five runs, all in the second inning, and that ended up being the game. The Guardians could never slug their way back and lost 5-2. Carrasco lasted four innings allowing seven hits and five runs, walking one while striking out five. The line score did not look good, but Stephen Vogt that it was not representative of how he pitched. “Cookie’s stuff looked pretty good, velo was up a little bit,” he told reporters afterwards. “I thought he did a nice job, he just got hit. They jumped him and the capitalized with people on base.”
The loss dropped Carrasco to 2-5 and raised his ERA to 5.66. The loss dropped the Guardians to 39-20 on the year and coupled with Kansas City’s 4-3 win over San Diego gives Cleveland a four game lead in the Central heading into play on Monday.in the game and drove in the only Guardian runs with a two-run double on the first pitch he saw in the second inning.
