A small Norwegian fishing boat claimed to be the target of a warning shot fired by a Russian warship while in Norway's exclusive economic zone earlier this month.The September 12 encounter occurred in the waters north of the Varanger Peninsula, which is the northeastern-most part of Norway and borders the Barents Sea, one of the Arctic Ocean's marginal seas, online news site FriFagbevegelse reported on Monday.

While a coastal state has sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing natural resources within its economic zone, it 'shall have due regard to the rights and duties of other states,' the international maritime treaty says.
