On March 9, and following a default judgment, a bankruptcy notice was issued to the mining entrepreneur for a total of $31,879.54, being the unpaid coaching plus a sum for interest. While such notices don’t make their recipients bankrupt, they do give them 21 days to pay or make other arrangement with their creditor, after which bankruptcy proceedings could be commenced against them.
Contacted about the debt on Wednesday, Tinkler told us the debt wasn’t his, and that the issue has “been resolved”.“First I knew about it was today, contacted those involved, and it’s been paid,” he told us over text message, adding that he’d never seen any paperwork about the matter. Tinkler blazed his way to riches on a series of escalating bets on rising coal prices, the first of which involved him scraping together all he owned for a $1 million down payment on the Middleton coal mine, which he ended up selling a year later for $441 million. After hitting a $1.1 billion valuation in 2011,, culminating in a $540 million bankruptcy that’s since been annulled.
