At least one of the three bills targeting Florida public utilities picked up local support from state Rep. Wyman Duggan, whose law firm, Rogers Towers, worked for NextEra, the parent company to Florida Power & Light, during the 2019 privatization effort. NextEra bid more than $11 billion to acquire JEA.

JEA's annual contribution to the city has grown over the decades and become an increasingly important component of the city budget. The current contribution is $122.4 million.
