The board voted unanimously, 7–0, in favor of change, which follows a Monday–Friday schedule. The decision they said was based on feedback gathered from staff, students, and parents, as well as discussions among board members., more than 180 Texas school districts adopted the four-day school week, as of the 2024-25 school year. That is a major jump from just eight districts in 2019-20. Many of those school districts are in rural areas.Under the Texas Education Code, districts are required to provide 75,600 minutes of instruction per year rather than a set number of days. This flexibility allows schools to drop one day by extending the remaining four days by 30 to 50 minutes.The four-day school week has had a very positive impact on my children both academically and mentally. They seem more refreshed, focused, and motivated during the school week. Knowing they have a three-day weekend gives them something to look forward to, which has made them more willing and to attend school. It also allows them to rest and reset. Disappointed about this change. Anita Kenkel commented, “This change is extremely disappointing. Not every child is a perfect, cookie-cutter, neurotypical child. Our district has many children with various disabilities and/or medical complexities. The 4-day school week allowed those children to attend medically necessary appointments, such as therapy, on Fridays and gave them an extra day to rest and decompress. I urge the district to reconsider.”Brandon Burke wrote, “They are doing it for grant eligibility. There are a minimum of 165 day to meet requirements for $. They had a 157 day four day schedule on version all they had to do was find 8 days. I was able to find those days quite easily but apparently there was no amending them.
