After weeks of delays, NASA is finally preparing for the launch of a historic mission this week. The Artemis II flight will send a crew of four astronauts on a groundbreaking nine-day journey around the moon and back. The launch is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1, at 6:24 p.m. EDT. The crew includes commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, astronaut Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The launch will be atop a Space Launch System rocket, considered the most powerful operational booster in the world. NASA began its launch countdown on Monday afternoon, with weather forecasts indicating an 80% chance of favorable conditions. Wiseman expressed excitement, stating the world has been waiting a long time to witness this event. Delays were initially caused by hydrogen fuel leaks and issues with the upper stage propellant pressurization system, both of which have been resolved, clearing the way for the mission to proceed. This mission holds significant importance as it marks the first crewed flight of the SLS rocket and the first piloted flight of an Orion deep space crew capsule.\The Artemis II mission serves as a critical test flight for the Orion spacecraft. The primary objective is to thoroughly evaluate the crew ship, named Integrity. The mission will encompass various scenarios, including potential three or four-day orbits around Earth and the ultimate goal of reaching the moon. Wiseman, Glover, and Koch bring extensive NASA experience to the mission, while Hansen will become the first Canadian to venture beyond Earth orbit. The crew will be the first to journey to the moon since the Apollo 17 flight over 50 years ago, representing a major milestone. This mission is a significant step in the new space race, particularly with China, which plans to land its own taikonauts on the lunar surface by 2030. NASA aims to win this race by launching one or possibly two Artemis moon landing missions in 2028. The Artemis II voyage will involve comprehensive testing of the Orion crew capsule. Following this, NASA plans to have astronauts rendezvous and dock with new moon landers in low-Earth orbit, testing critical systems and operating procedures. Subsequently, NASA astronauts will embark on a moon landing near the lunar south pole in the near future. The agency is also focusing on increasing flight frequency and designing a moon base to facilitate long-duration research and technology development.\NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman highlighted the agency's step-by-step approach, mirroring the successful Apollo program of the 1960s. He emphasized the current mission's goal is long-term presence on the moon rather than simply flags and footprints. The Artemis II crew will launch from Florida aboard the SLS rocket, generating nearly 9 million pounds of thrust. The rocket will accelerate the Orion crew ship to nearly 5 miles per second, completing the ascent to space in approximately eight minutes. Two rocket firings will set the spacecraft on an elliptical orbit, reaching a high point of 43,760 miles. The Orion capsule will separate from the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage after a few hours post-launch. The 24-hour orbit will provide the crew ample time to assess the performance of Orion's communication, navigation, propulsion, and life support systems. The testing will include comprehensive checks, including the functionality of the capsule's waste collection system. Glover and Wiseman will test the Orion's maneuvering capabilities, simulating future rendezvous and docking operations with landers and the planned Gateway space station in lunar orbit
