If NASA ’s Perseverance Mars rover was human, it would probably be feeling proud, excited and thrilled right about now. It recently discovered an intriguing rock that might change our understanding of life in our solar system. That occasion was worthy of a selfie celebration.last week showing the rover posing with a rock named “Cheyava Falls.” It may one day be considered a historic moment.
The selfie shows Perseverance on a rocky Mars landscape in the Jezero Crater with wheel tracks visible below. Look to the center of the image to see Cheyava Falls, a flat rock with a white abrasion patch and a dark drill hole showing on its surface. The rock measures just over 3 feet at its widest. The rover is the size of a small car.
NASA released a second version of the selfie with the rover looking down at the rock. A GIF puts it into motion. “What a week! Anyone else possibly discover signs of microbial life from billions of years ago on a planet 140 million miles from Earth? No? Just me?” tfrom the red planet’s past. Perseverance drilled out a small sample and placed it in a tube for safekeeping.
