NASA ’s Curiosity rover ran over a rock on Mars in late May. That’s par for the course on the red planet, but there was something very different about this rock. It had a surprise inside: pure sulfur crystals, something never before seen on Mars . “We don't know much about these yellow crystals yet, but my team is excited to investigate,”
An image of the rock shows crushed material with yellow crystals, like a geode that’s been smooshed. If you’re reaching to pinch your nose against the rotten-egg smell, don’t worry. NASA notes that elemental sulfur doesn’t have an odor. The rock appears to have some company. Curiosity found a field of similar light-toned rocks that may hide the same sulfur secret.
