Defending champion Tadu Nare of Ethiopia is on course to emulate South African long distance athletes René Kalmer and Irvette van Zyl when she attempts to secure a hat-trick of titles in the series of six Spar Grand Prix 10km races. | Sport24news

Former South African long-distance athletes Rene Kalmer says there'll be a real challenge ahead of the Spar Grand Prix 10km.The fourth of six Spar Grand Prix 10km races takes place on Saturday in Mbombela.

For Kalmer, who won the Spar Grand Prix three times in 2007, 2009 and 2012, and finished in the top 10 for the first 10 years of the Grand Prix's existence - the hilly terrain in Mbombela will offer a completely new challenge. "Yet, the inland races offer something unique that compensates for the increased difficulty. The atmosphere surrounding these events is simply remarkable, with mass participation bringing an unparalleled sense of camaraderie and excitement.

Nare missed the first leg of the series in Cape Town but picked up bonus point wins in Gqeberha and Durban. She now lurks ominously in fourth place overall.
