FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks volleyball team claimed the title in the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic on Saturday after a 3-1 win over the University of North Carolina Pembroke Braves .
Tournament MVP Karlie Nielson used her power and accuracy on a thumper from the outside that crossed the floor and just cleared the net, bringing the scoreline to 19-11. UNC Pembroke failed to break the Nanooks’ momentum, and senior middle blocker Kristina Head tallied the final point for the Nanooks, catching two Braves’ players off balance with a smart tip over the net to her right to give the home team the first set, 25-13.
From there, however, it was all Nanooks. They built an 18-6 lead to start out the third, eventually taking the set by 10 points. Putting up numbers throughout the game, graduate outside hitter Rachel Pierce continued getting points on the board in the fourth, bagging another four kills to carry her to a game-leading 16 kills on the night as UAF snatched the set, 25-14.Recently returning from an injury, Pierce said after the game that support from fans and her teammates has been key to churning out strong performances.
Nielson stayed relatively quiet on the night with two kills and earning three points — a season low for her. Guc finished Saturday’s game with six kills and two aces, while White racked up 12 kills, three aces and two blocks.
