The university with 3,600 students has been on probation since October, but officials say a recent state approval validates its recovery efforts.

said it has taken a key step forward as it seeks to emerge from a financial crisis that has threatened the school’s accreditation and prompted layoffs. The private university in Mercer County said it recently received an “affirmation of approval” from the New Jersey State Approving Agency, a state body that reviews educational institutions and programs serving U.

S. veterans. The state agency’s report “found no approval discrepancies and required no follow-up actions, affirming Rider’s continued eligibility as an institution of choice for veterans and their dependents,” university officials said. The report from the state agency comes as Rider is trying to emerge from probation with its accrediting agency due to its financial problems. Rider was placed on probation Oct. 30 by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the organization that has accredited colleges in New Jersey and other mid-Atlantic states since 1952. Losing accreditation usually means a college would have to shut down. But Rider, which has about 3,600 students, remains accredited while it is on probation and classes are continuing. It is highly unusual for a major university to lose its accreditation because the Middle States Commission on Higher Education usually gives schools ample time to make improvements. In response to its financial crisis, Rider laid off up to 35 full-time faculty members in December and reduced salaries of most employees by 14%. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is expected to decide on Rider’s continuing accreditation when it meets in March, the university previously said. The separate review by the New Jersey State Approving Agency that found no problems with the school continuing to serve veterans is a good sign, Rider officials said. “This affirmation is a meaningful validation of the work our community has undertaken,” Rider President John Loyack said in a post on the university’s website. “It reflects thoughtful planning, responsible stewardship and our commitment to continue serving our students —including our veteran community — as we work closely with Middle States and other partners to secure a sustainable future for Rider,” Loyack said.Rob Jennings is a journalist whose work has appeared on NJ.com and in the Star-Ledger since 2016.
