It shone brightly but faded quickly.
It was spotted by a team from Queen’s University
, who observed the event growing brighter and brighter over nine days using the Atlas network of telescopes in Hawaii, Chile and South Africa, which scan the whole visible sky every night for any changes.‘It’s a combination of properties that don’t match any known kind of object we’ve seen before,’ said lead author Dr Matt Nicholl, speaking to Metro.co.uk’s sister publication New Scientist.
‘We’ve seen really bright supernovae before and we’ve seen supernovae that fade really quickly, and we’ve seen supernovae in old galaxies, but never all three at the same time.’The dazzling explosion spotted by a team at Queen’s University Belfast, marked by the yellow cross ‘Our data showed that this event happened in a massive, red galaxy two billion light years away,’ said co-author Dr Shubham Srivastav. ‘These galaxies contain billions of stars like our sun, but they shouldn’t have any stars big enough to end up as a supernova.’supermassive black holeThe team believes the most likely explanation is that a rare intermediate-mass black hole devoured a neighbouring star.
