Mum of two Joanna Lovell takes a close look at exactly how much she's spent on her daughter's school uniform – and is shocked.
I never usually add up how exactly much I spend on the Back to School shop. I'm fairly organised and so I start early and spread it out between at least two pay days – so in the past I've probably always turned a bit of a blind eye to the exact total. I'm not sure I ever really wanted to know!
Despite government guidance to reduce costs, the analysis from the Children’s Society shows that parents who are required by schools to buy clothing featuring official school logos are paying much more than for unbranded items. I admit I could have got cheaper school shirts but the Next ones wash well and last longer and don't discolour, so in the long run are cheaper than the supermarket ones.
I've just paid £12.99 for a branded sports top, yet at primary school I could get a white polo neck t-shirt for £5 for 2 at Asda. 'We urge schools to reduce the number of branded items required, which could significantly lower expenses for parents.
