The new Nissan Z has had a slow rollout. Nissan has sold just 1309 examples so far this year, according to its third-quarter sales release, so we've had few opportunities to see modded ones being pushed to the limit.
Based on this new TikTok from Goracebox, if you're throwing mods at it and thrashing it on a drag strip, the differential may be a weak point.The video follows a modded Z doing repeated drag runs. It starts out on a normal surface, but for the next run gets a prepped surface for a quicker launch. That first run went well. The Z has a tune, an upgraded intercooler and heat exchanger, a flex fuel kit, racing fuel pumps, and a free-flowing exhaust, along with drag tires on bead-lock wheels. The result is a quicker run than stock, with a violent launch.Too violent, it turns out. Even though the engine, transmission, and turbochargers are all stock, the extra power and the ultra-sticky surface prove fatal to the differential. As the driver attempts to launch the car, it snaps and the car shudders. The driver keeps the car on for a worrying amount of time, but eventually kills the ignition and reveals the grenaded rear end. Obviously, no road car is built for repeated prepped-surface launches with more power than stock. But during our own track testing of the Z NISMO, I noticed that the diff temperature spiked to 330 degrees, a worrying figure. If you intend to push far beyond the stock power output, then, it's probably a good idea to look into upgrades for the rear end.
