) - A man suspected of murder and arrested within 24 hours of the killing was accidentally given bond and released from the Jefferson County Jail , according to court records. Terance Akeem Alexander, 37, is charged with murder, first-degree assault, discharging a firearm into an unoccupied building, and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle in Birmingham Police believe Alexander shot and killed Taevion Arnold following an “interaction.
” A woman was also shot, but is expected to survive. BPD’s Crime Reduction Team arrested Alexander in Trussville on Aug. 9 and placed him in the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour felony hold. Court records show he was transferred to the Jefferson County Jail on Aug. 11 after he was formally charged with Arnold’s murder. According to an arrest warrant signed on Aug. 11, a magistrate ordered Alexander be held on no bond on the murder charge, but court records with the same date show his bond was set at $60,000. Alexander’s bail was set at $30,000 bond for the assault charge, and $15,000 each firearm related charge. Court records show he posted the $120,000 bond on Aug. 11 and was released from the Jefferson County Jail the morning of Aug. 12. The same day, Circuit Judge Shanta Owens filed an order noting Alexander “was mistakenly given a bond of $60,000 by the magistrate’s office” and that his bond “should have been set at a NO BOND with an Aniah’s hearing to follow.”Jefferson County Jail recordsTerance Akeem Alexander was mistakenly released on bond after he was arrested on murder charges. He was convicted in Oct. 2023 for two counts of possession with intent to distribute and received a five year split sentence to serve 15 months in a Jefferson County community corrections program and three months in jail, followed by two years of unsupervised probation. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion to revoke probation in that case on Aug. 12. According to court records, that motion was filed at 3:20 p.m. and a judge issued an order for Alexander’s arrest at 4:36 p.m. A spokesperson with BPD told WBRC, “BPD is working closely with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to address any potential errors that may have occurred.” WBRC reached out to the magistrate’s office and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office about this case and will update this story with those responses.
