After days of sunshine that lulled Utah drivers into springtime comfort, residents in the days leading up to Easter Weekend were having to navigate rain and, for some areas of the state, snow. The morning commute was a challenge through Davis County , where a series of crashes involving dozens of vehicles left all southbound lanes closed during peak drive times.
The Utah Department of Transportation reported that all but one lane was closed on US Highway 89 in the Kaysville-Fruit Heights area during Friday morning's rain and snow.By 8 a.m., the department had issued a road alert advising drivers to avoid the area. Around the same time, the Kaysville Fire Department reported that crews had already responded to 23 crashes at the Main Street interchange on southbound U.S. Highway 89.According to the agency, six people were evaluated, and one person was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Photos released of the crashes showed debris scattered along the shoulder of the slick, slushy roadway. Multiple vehicles appeared to have been heavily damaged. The return of winter driving conditions comes just days after Utahns were enjoying sunshine and temperatures in the 70s.
