“There’s a lot of challenges with starting something from the ground up,” said Sean Heath, a parent from American Fork. The portion of Draper in Utah County, Lehi, Highland, Alpine, Cedar Hills and American Fork have voted to join an interlocal agreement to debate the issue.“Anytime that you're expanding and you're growing out of necessity, I feel like those challenges, even though they're challenges, they're good ones to have,” Heath said. A feasibility study concluded that a new school district made up of those six cities is a viable alternative, providing an opportunity for more local control and potential tax savings relative to the Alpine School District. “If it saves us money, you know, that would be really good,” said Paul Eischens, a grandparent with nine grandkids in school in what would be this new district.“They gotta go to school somewhere, and so we gotta make sure we have enough schools for the kids,” Eischens said. Public comment is open until August 2. The city council will decide whether to put this on the ballot.
