Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani challenges the MCU being designated as Earth-616. Vellani plays Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, an Avengers-superfan-turned-superhero, in the upcoming Disney+ series from Marvel Studios. And, through the actor's social media posts and public appearances, she has proven she's somewhat of an MCU superfan herself.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, both Doctor Strange and America Chavez traverse multiple alternate universes in an attempt to escape the reach of the Scarlet Witch. They eventually land in one reality that identifies themselves as Earth-838, while revealing they have designated the MCU Earth-616.
No, I mean, I'd like to say, [the comics are] 616. I don't believe that the MCU is 616. As much as Kevin Feige can make us think that it's 616, it is 199999. Vellani appears to understand that, since a 1938 issue of The Daredevils, the main continuity of Marvel Comics has fallen under the universal designation of Earth-616. As Marvel has continued to label different adaptations of its stories and characters as different universes, it would be understood that the MCU would also be designated differently.
Although Marvel Studios has seemingly labeled the MCU as Earth-616, which Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness just confirmed, it is possible for the MCU to still be considered Earth-199999. In the film series, the characters can label each universe whatever they want, and those designations can be separated from Marvel's. Earth-838's declaration does not need to have any bearing on what the MCU is referred to by fans. Regardless, the Ms.
