Multiple lanes of Interstate 580 closed to traffic Wednesday after a solo motorcycle crash claimed its rider’s life, authorities said.
Shortly after 4:10 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of the collision in I-580 lanes just west of the Dutton Avenue off-ramp.
Officers arrived to find the rider’s body lying in the roadway in the No. 1 or left-most lane of eastbound I-580, and learned that the motorcyclist had been riding in westbound lanes before crashing into a metal guardrail. The motorcycle was found in the center divide of the westbound side. The rider was pronounced dead on the freeway. An identity was not available, pending next-of-kin notification from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau.
The CHP issued a Sig-alert at 4:32 p.m. blocking the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes of I-580 in both directions near Golf Links Road, advising drivers to avoid the area or seek alternate routes. There were no signs of alcohol or substances as collision factors, but investigators were working to determine whether speed or stop-and-go traffic conditions played roles.Contact George Kelly at 408-859-5180.
